Book Donations Wanted.

Whether it’s memories of a loved one reading to us, or the result of reading the same story to our own children night after night, many of us can still recite word-for-word some of our favorite, classic children’s books. But some children may never get that experience because they don’t have access to timeless stories like Stellaluna or the Lorax.

Keep Norfolk Beautiful is hoping to change that. In a volunteer effort that combines childhood literacy with recycling, k-n-b is on a quest to collect gently used copies of each of the books on the national association of education’s educators top 100 books.

The collected books will then be distributed to Norfolk school children through schools and libraries.

You can find a complete list of the top 100 books at www.norfolkbeautiful.org.

If you have a gently used copy of any of the books on the list and are willing to donate it, please call 441-1347

Just in Time for Oyster Roast Season! KNB provides Norfolk residents with shell recycling options.

During this century, oysters have been the most harvested animal in the Chesapeake Bay. Between heavy harvest, loss of reef habitat, pollution, and disease, they may be fading away. The Chesapeake’s oyster population today is thought to be one percent of what it was just over a century ago.

Many things need to happen: cleaner water, continued restoration, and habitat replenishment.

Residents can help:

Collect shells from an oyster roast or community event in a breathable bag and take to one of two drop-off location in Norfolk – Ernie Morgan Center (Lafayette Park) and Larchmont Library. Some pick-up service is also available.

• Visit a participating restaurant that collects shells and tell the server to save the shells for the program. Participating restaurants: Tanner's Creek Seafood Restaurant and Raw Bar, 5103 Colley Ave., Norfolk, VA. (757) 423- 2430 O'Sullivan's Wharf, 4300 Colley Ave. Norfolk, VA. (757) 423-3746 www.osullivanswharf.com  More restaurants wanted!

KNB is currently seeking additional restaurants, and potential sites for drop-off locations in the Norfolk area. For suggestions, or more information, contact KNB at 441-1347 or visit www.norfokbeautiful.org.
