Make and Keep Willoughby “Green” and Beautiful! Much time and effort has been invested by Willoughby residents and the city to improve the appearance of our neighborhoods and to protect our natural resources. The work on the 4th View Portal, the Ocean View Ave median and the sand replenishment are clear examples. We are making good progress. Thanks to all who maintain their properties, pick up litter and work on our public areas as well. This article is all about volunteers. We need more! We all understand that many volunteer hands sharing the load make fast work of any task. A presentation was made at the August Civic League Meeting outlining the various programs underway in Willoughby to continue to make progress on environmental stewardship and general housekeeping in our community. These programs include recycling, litter prevention/cleanup on our streets and beach, energy conservation, storm water management, graffiti removal and awareness to all issues and hazards as they surface. About 25 neighbors attended the presentation and some volunteered to get involved. We appreciate the support. Now, a few words about litter (We will address the other programs in future newsletters.): Imagine a perfect Willoughby neighborhood where everything is above average. Kids are playing ball in the empty lot where the Ocean Dream once stood. A foul ball breaks a window, but the owner decides not to fix it right away. Then, because the house looks a bit shabby, another neighbor leaves a junked car on the street. Then graffiti shows up on the house with the broken window and it is not cleaned up. Then folks stop picking up garbage from their yards. This is called the “Broken Window Effect”. If residents don’t care, things will get worse. The opposite is also true: Take care of the little things and the big stuff will be much easier. If you have signed up to patrol streets or beaches and pick up litter, THANK YOU! If you have not yet signed up but police the litter on a regular basis, THANk YOU and please let us know who you are and where you patrol. And if you are willing to look after your block once a week or so, please begin and let us know who you are and where you patrol. We’ll include all volunteers we know about on a brief monthly email status outlining our coverage, guidelines and results.
